Artist's Description
Early electric locomotive. Crowd standing in front of a Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) DD1 locomotive. DD1s consisted of two half-locomotives coupled back- to-back, and drew their power from a third rail. They were built in 1910 to operate on the New York City branch of the PRR, hauling trains through tunnels under the Hudson River. Steam locomotives were banned from the city in 1910 after the reduced visibility brought about by clouds of steam resulted in a fatal accident. This image is from the Bain News Service, one of America's oldest news picture agencies, which holds images dating from the 1890s to the 1930s.
