Description
I had the boards for this triptych/trinity textured and started an initial background. I worked with it quite a while that day getting a Mayan tree of life pattern on each of them. When I was satisfied with the design, I pulled back a ways from the boards to get a different perspective. I deepened and slowed my breath as I gazed at the boards and prayed for inspiration with no avail. Later that night I went to bed still not knowing what I was going to paint.
I am lucid in my dreams and find myself in a large cage at night in a clearing of a jungle somewhere in South America. Out of the thick, dark foliage next to my lone jail cell emerged a man with a jaguar skull on his head accompanied by a black jaguar on each side of him. The man walked, passing straight through the thick bars of the jail and took a seat just a few feet away and facing me. Staring into my eyes, he tells me a story of a priest and his son. Although no memories of any details of that tale remain the next morning, at the end he says with a stern but cordial tone, “I want this published.”
He then stood up and leapt through the bars on the opposite side from where he entered. The two jaguars jumped on top of the cage and off to join the priest running towards the dark, dense jungle on the other side of the clearing. They returned on each side of the man, playfully pushing against each other as they ran. Then, just before disappearing into the jungle, the powerful man transformed into a black jaguar.
The first image that I saw the next day as I gazed into the triptych was in the board on the right. It was the man with the skull cap running, coming from the sun with a lit torch in one hand. Then I saw the dolphins on the left board and finally the image on the middle piece.
